Monthly Report on China
Steel Market for February
2012
China
steel price rallied in February 2012. In the first twenty
days of February, the steel price dropped slightly compared to pre-Spring
Festival caused by unrecovered demand, with deeper price lose seen in
construction steel. Entering late February,
China
steel price was pushed up by releasing market demand and low inventory at
traders. At present, domestic crude steel production could not get back to
the normal level seen in last year, steel products exports firm up, steel
demand from downstream industry and traders is waking up, therefore,
SteelHome expects that China steel price will go up amid stability in
March 2012.

HRC/CRC Market for February 2012
Domestic
HR coil prices in February kept upward tendency, especially entering into
late February, HR coil prices soared sharply coupled with the releasing
demands. Compared with prior years, domestic CR/HR coil inventory proved
to be lower after the Spring Festival holiday, and furthermore, the output
has little possibilities to mount up in the short run, traders mainly show
scarce intentions to sell at low prices.
For
the moment, domestic majority mills boost their selling prices for March,
in a bid to offset the meager profit and losses. Later, prices of CR/HR
coil will ascend continuously.

Coke Market for February 2012
China
coke market cooled down in February. Steel mills in
Northeast China
reduced coke purchase price by about CNY 30 per tonne as large supply
during the Spring Festival sufficiently meet their demand for the
material. In North China and
East China
, large-scale steel mills kept purchase price unchanged, while some small
and medium-sized ones announced a drop of CNY 10-30 per tonne due to the
bleak performance of steel market. In Central and
Southwest China
regions, steel mills also followed the trend in cutting it by CNY 30 per
tonne.
Coking
enterprises had low inventories, persistently struggling to slash
production in a bid to bolster up coke prices. Coke prices will very
likely hold steady with slight drop in early March if coal companies lower
coking coal prices. However, the market is expected to stabilize in
mid-March when an upturn may take place in domestic steel market.
