Houston — Illinois Basin coal production totaled over 19.2 million st in the first quarter of 2020, down 7.3% from the previous quarter and down 30.7% from the year-ago quarter, Mine Health and Safety Administration data showed in May.
This was the fourth consecutive week on week and year on year decline in four quarters.
Alliance Resource Partners' River View mine in Kentucky was the top producer in the basin with total output of over 2.8 million st, up 3.2% from the previous quarter but down 7.2% year on year.
Foresight Energy's Illinois-based MC#1 mine followed with 2.3 million st, down 5.8% from Q4 2019 and down 40.6% from the year-ago quarter.
Prairie State's Lively Grove mine in Illinois produced 1.8 million st during the quarter, up 15.3% from the previous quarter and up 3.2% year on year.
On a company basis, Alliance mines produced about 5.4 million st in Q1, down 12.9% quarter on quarter and down 36.3% from the year-ago quarter. Output from Alliance was at its lowest since S&P Global Platts began collecting data in 2014.
Peabody mine output totaled about 3.3 million st in the first quarter, down 9.1% from Q4 2019 and down 26.9% from Q1 2019. Peabody production was also at its lowest since Platts began collecting data.
Arch Coal production in the Illinois Basin totaled nearly 292,024 st in the quarter, down 9.1% from the previous quarter and down 36.3% from the year-ago quarter.
By state, Illinois mines produced 8.8 million st in Q1, down 1.9% from Q4 and down 32.1% from the year-ago quarter.
Indiana mines produced almost 5.8 million st in the first quarter, down 14.8% from the previous quarter and down 34.2% from Q1 2019.
Kentucky output was 4.7 million st, down 6.6% from the quarter before and down 23.1% year on year.
