The consumer price index (CPI) of Vietnam, which measures changes in the prices paid by consumers for a basket of goods and services, rose 4.19 percent on-year in the first half this year, according to the country's General Statistics Office on Wednesday.

The rise in food and foodstuff prices, especially pork price, and the hikes in beverage, cigarette and cloth prices were attributed to the increased index, said the office.

Meanwhile, factors helping to curb the CPI growth between January and June included the decrease of essential goods prices including petroleum and gas, impacts of COVID-19 epidemic and the government's support packages for those affected by the epidemic, the office added.

In June alone, Vietnam's CPI increased by 3.17 percent year-on-year.

The CPI of Vietnam rose 2.79 percent in 2019, the lowest level in the three-year period. Vietnam has a targeted CPI growth of under 4 percent this year.
