The Global Steel Dynamics Forum 2023, organized jointly by World
Steel Dynamics (WSD) and Association for Iron & Steel Technology
(AIST), took place successfully at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New
York, USA from June 26th to 28th. The conference revolved around
discussions on topics such as "Decarbonization Technology Pathways
for the Steel Industry," "Definition and Standards of Green Steel,"
and "Steel Market Supply and Demand Outlook for 2030." This event
attracted approximately 500 delegates from nearly 30 countries
worldwide.
Mr. Wu Wenzhang, the founder and chairman of SteelHome website, was
invited to attend the conference and delivered a speech on the
morning of the 27th. The title of his speech was "Chinese Steel
Industry Has Entered a Stage of High-quality Development: Future
Development Trends in Chinese Steel Industry." The speech material
was presented on behalf of Mr. Wu by Mr. Philipp G. Englin, CEO of
WSD, who delivered the speech on-site. The main points of the speech
are as follows:
Ø
The Chinese steel industry has entered a stage of high-quality
development, with the three main themes for future development being
green and low-carbon practices, structural adjustments, and
intelligent manufacturing.
Ø
China's steel industry will continue to accelerate mergers and
acquisitions, and it is expected that by 2035, the concentration of
the Chinese steel industry will reach around 70%.
Ø
The production and consumption of steel in China are entering a
declining trend. It is projected that by 2035, China's apparent
consumption of crude steel will decrease to 850-900 million tons,
and production will decrease to 900-950 million tons.
Ø
It is expected that by 2035, China's electric arc furnace steel
production capacity will reach 250-300 million tons. Direct
reduction technologies represented by new energy and hydrogen
metallurgy will witness significant development, leading to
breakthroughs in direct reduced iron production, thus creating
conditions for China's steel industry to achieve the "30/60 dual
carbon" target.
Ø
In 2023, China's crude steel production and apparent consumption
will be 1.02 billion tons and 940 million tons, respectively,
remaining flat and decreasing by 2.4% compared to 2022. In 2024,
China's crude steel production and apparent consumption will be 1
billion tons and 920 million tons, respectively. The price range for
ordinary hot-rolled steel from 2023 to 2024 is expected to be
between 3,500 and 4,500 yuan per ton, with a range of 80-120 USD per
ton for 62% imported iron ore (CIF).
During the conference, Mr. Wu Wenzhang paid a visit to WSD and
engaged in discussions with Mr. Philipp G. Englin, the CEO of WSD,
regarding potential collaborations in areas such as information,
consulting, and events. Both parties expressed mutual interest in
strengthening their cooperation and agreed to adjust and renew the
strategic cooperation agreement with regards to the specific areas
of collaboration. Additionally, Mr. Philipp G. Englin has been
invited to attend and deliver a keynote speech at the "20th Steel
Development Strategy Conference," organized by SteelHome, scheduled
to take place in Shanghai next April.
