On July 17th, the China Iron and Steel Association（CISA） organized a special research seminar on the development of electric furnace short process steelmaking in our country. The meeting was chaired by Luo Tiejun, Vice President of the China Iron and Steel Association, and attended by Wen Gang, Director of the Iron and Steel Department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's Raw Materials Division. Colleagues from the Chinese Society for Metals, China Association of Metal Scrap Utilization, China Metallurgical Industry Planning and Research Institute, China Metallurgical Information and Standardization Institute, Metallurgical Industry Press, China Steel Development Research Institute, University of Science and Technology Beijing, China Iron & Steel Research Institute Group, and other relevant units attended the meeting. Participants included Wang Yingsheng, Chief Economist of CISA, Deputy Secretaries Shi Hongwei and Gu Yan, as well as comrades from the Planning and Development Department, Market Research Department, Industrial Operations Department, and Science, Technology, and Environmental Protection Department.
At the meeting, the Planning and Development Department of the China Iron and Steel Association presented a research report on the development of EAF Steelmaking in China, covering the current status and trends of EAF Steelmaking both domestically and internationally, analysis of the carbon reduction potential of EAF Steelmaking in China, and its analysis concerning the competitiveness. The participating units fully acknowledged the pertinence, comprehensiveness, and systematic nature of the research report, and focused their discussions on topics such as the prediction of scrap steel output and Social Scrap Steel Reservoir in China, as well as the analysis of carbon reduction contributions from blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace and electric furnace short process steelmaking. They also provided relevant suggestions for modifications.
Luo Tiejun pointed out that short process steelmaking is an inevitable trend for achieving low-carbon and green development, and it is necessary to conduct research on the development of electric furnace short process steelmaking in China. He emphasized that, firstly, it is important to make accurate predictions on future steel demand, social steel accumulation, and scrap steel generation based on the principle of "Precision in short-term forecasts, Rough estimates for the long-term". Secondly, it is crucial to focus on the carbon reduction contributions of the entire society, carefully compare the advantages and disadvantages of long and short process steelmaking using scrap steel, thoroughly discuss and draw clear conclusions to provide guidance for the industry's development. Thirdly, it is necessary to enhance the hydrogen metallurgy + electric furnace and promote the localization of large-scale electric furnace equipment, guiding the industry to strengthen technological innovation.Lastly, efforts should be made to refine and improve the content of the report, providing support for transforming industry expertise into policy options for the government.
