According to statistics from China Iron and Steel Association (CISA), in Jan 2024, the total water consumption of key steel enterprises amounted to 7.854 billion cubic meters, an increase of 435 million cubic meters or 5.86% year-on-year. Among them, the water intake decreased by 2.296 million cubic meters compared to the same period of the previous year, a year-on-year decrease of 1.76%. The amount of water reused increased by 437 million cubic meters compared to the same period of the previous year, a year-on-year increase of 6.0%. The reuse rate was 98.37%, an increase of 0.13 percentage year-on-year. The water intake per ton steel was 2.2 cubic meters/ton, a year-on-year decrease of 5.23%.
The discharge volume decreased by 4.0528 million cubic meters compared to the same period of the previous year, a year-on-year decrease of 18.85%. The emissions of chemical oxygen demand, ammonia nitrogen, volatile phenol, total cyanide, suspended solids, and oil pollutants in the discharged wastewater decreased by 25.38%, 10.94%, 27.50%, 38.65%, 17.95%, and 45.85% year-on-year, respectively.
The total exhaust emissions increased by 12.41% year-on-year. Among the exhaust gases, the emissions of sulfur dioxide, particulates, and nitrogen oxides decreased by 3.25%, 10.02%, and 3.65% year-on-year, respectively. The sulfur dioxide emissions per ton steel were 0.19 kg/ton, a year-on-year decrease of 7.06%; the particulate emissions per ton of steel were 0.15 kg/ton, a year-on-year decrease of 12.24%; and the nitrogen oxide emissions per ton of steel were 0.30 kg/ton, a year-on-year decrease of 7.81%.
The production of steel slag reached 7.2058 million tons, an increase of 4.99% year-on-year. The production of blast furnace slag amounted to 19.4185 million tons, an increase of 5.88% year-on-year. The production of iron-bearing dust and mud reached 3.3208 million tons, an increase of 4.91% year-on-year. The utilization rate of steel slag was 98.63%, an increase of 0.61 percentage points compared to the same period of the previous year. The utilization rate of blast furnace slag was 96.99%, a decrease of 0.44 percentage points compared to the same period of the previous year. The utilization rate of iron-bearing dust and mud was 99.87%, an increase of 0.54 percentage points compared to the same period of the previous year.
The production of blast furnace gas amounted to 79.757 billion cubic meters, an increase of 3.87% year-on-year. The production of converter gas reached 6.653 billion cubic meters, an increase of 3.36% year-on-year. The production of coke oven gas amounted to 4.667 billion cubic meters, an increase of 4.43% year-on-year. The utilization rate of blast furnace gas was 98.95%, an increase of 0.38 percentage points compared to the same period of the previous year. The utilization rate of converter gas was 98.02%, an increase of 0.09 percentage points compared to the same period of the previous year. The utilization rate of coke oven gas was 98.73%, a decrease of 0.27 percentage points compared to the same period of the previous year.
