Brazilian iron ore export volumes increased by 1.63% in 2018 compared with the previous year because of higher prices, Fastmarkets has learnt.
The country shipped a total of 389.81 million tonnes of iron ore last year, compared with 383.54 million tonnes in 2017, according to figures released by the country's foreign trade ministry, MDIC, on Wednesday January 2.
Major Brazilian miners have been benefiting from a preference for high-quality material, due to increased pollution controls in China.
Fastmarkets' daily index price for Brazilian fines containing 65% Fe averaged $90.41 per tonne cfr Qingdao in 2018, compared with $88.01 per tonne cfr Qingdao in 2017. The index was $86.60 on January 2.
As a result, iron ore export revenues increased year-on-year by 4.58% in 2018 to $20.08 billion, against $19.20 billion a year before.
The average iron ore export price was $55.20 per tonne fob in December, compared with $46.70 per tonne fob in December 2017, MDIC figures showed.
