JFE Steel Corporation announced the inclusion of its groundbreaking research and development on a steel pipe for high pressure hydrogen gas transportation in an esteemed R&D project under The Nippon Foundation’s DeepStar Joint Research & Development Program on Offshore Oil and Natural Gas. This collaborative initiative, taking place from 2021 to 2026 in partnership with major oil companies, aims to drive decarbonization efforts.

JFE Steel will collaborate with DeepStar consortium members ExxonMobil and TotalEnergies to establish evaluation criteria and methods for utilizing their remarkable Mighty Seam™ electric resistance-welded steel pipe, ensuring the safe and reliable transport of high pressure hydrogen and pioneering the world's first commercial high pressure hydrogen pipeline.

The Mighty Seam™ steel pipe possesses the unique ability to achieve flawless weld quality through electric-resistance welding, enabling continuous real-time inspection along its entire length. This exceptional feature enhances the pipe's reliability and resilience, allowing it to endure even the harshest environments.

With a shared commitment to decarbonization, JFE Steel endeavors to meet the evolving requirements of oil companies. In this project, JFE Steel's esteemed Steel Research Laboratory in Chiba, Japan, will delve into the vital properties of toughness essential for high-pressure hydrogen pipelines. Leveraging the Engineering Critical Assessment (ECA) process, which utilizes material properties and stress histories to determine criteria for ensuring acceptable risk tolerances during production and dependable performance in the field, the laboratory will focus on researching and evaluating fracture toughness in high-pressure hydrogen environments using specimens obtained from steel pipes.

The Nippon Foundation, acknowledged by Japan's Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism as a non-profit organization, primarily supports marine vessel projects, public welfare initiatives, and international cooperation endeavors funded through proceeds from regulated boat racing conducted by local governments in Japan.

The esteemed DeepStar consortium comprises industry giants such as Chevron (USA), Shell (UK), Equinor (Norway), and other leading companies engaged in offshore oil and natural gas exploration, development, and production on a global scale. Additionally, universities and research institutes collaborating with these companies in marine technology development contribute to the consortium's vast expertise.
