JFE Steel, the second-largest steel manufacturer in Japan, plans to start up a large electric arc furnace at its Kurashiki City factory by the end of 2027, which will cost one billion yen to replace the No. 2 blast furnace.
This is the world's first attempt to use large-scale electric furnaces containing direct reduced iron to produce high-grade steel purchased from the United Arab Emirates. JFE Steel plans to produce 2 million tons of high-grade steel per year, and most of the raw materials are direct reduced iron (DRI). They plan to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by at least 30% by 2030 compared with 2013 levels.
In addition, JFE Steel is seeking government support for investment and operating costs to ease the financial pressure caused by the introduction of large electric furnaces.
