Synopsis: The Czech Republic's steel industry faced significant challenges in 2023, with crude steel production falling to 3.4 million metric tons, the lowest since the country's independence in 1993. Apparent steel consumption also decreased by 1 million metric tons to 5.6 million metric tons, as the industry grappled with high energy prices and inflation.

Article:
The Czech Republic's steel industry experienced a tumultuous year in 2023, as both production and consumption of steel declined significantly. According to the Steel Union, crude steel production reached just 3.4 million metric tons last year, marking the lowest level since the country gained independence in 1993. This represents a sharp 21% decrease from the previous year, with production falling by 800,000 metric tons.

Apparent steel consumption also took a hit, dropping by 1 million metric tons to 5.6 million metric tons compared to 2022. Roman Heide, chairman of the Steel Union's supervisory board, attributed this decline to the dire situation in the construction industry and other consumer sectors, including the automotive and mechanical engineering industries. He also cited the European industry's long-term competitiveness issues, stemming from the world's highest energy prices and high inflation rates.

As a result of the declining production, the amount of goods exported from the Czech Republic also decreased, falling from 4 million metric tons in 2022 to 3.7 million metric tons last year. Steel imports into the country also dropped from 6.6 million metric tons to 6.3 million metric tons. According to the Czech Statistical Office, the value of exports plummeted by 19.3% to $1.7 billion.

The outlook for the industry remains bleak, given the economic slowdown in Germany and other key European Union markets. The future of Liberty Ostrava steelworks, which halted production in December 2023 and requested a temporary moratorium on creditor protection, is also uncertain. The company's management is working on a restructuring plan to ensure its continued operation.

Across the European Union, apparent steel consumption fell by 6.3% to 129 million metric tons last year, marking the fourth negative result in the past five years. Crude steel production in the EU also declined by more than 7%. The share of imports in European steel consumption gradually increased, reaching 20% last year.

Global crude steel production in 2023 reached 1.89 billion metric tons, roughly the same as in 2022. China remains the world leader in steel production, accounting for 54% of global output. Among the top ten producers, only India (+11.8%) and Russia (+5.6%) saw significant growth in production.

Conclusion:
The Czech Republic's steel industry faced significant challenges in 2023, with plummeting production and dwindling demand. The decline in crude steel production to its lowest level since the country's independence, coupled with a sharp decrease in apparent steel consumption, highlights the industry's struggles amidst high energy prices, inflation, and a slowdown in key consumer sectors. As the European Union market continues to face similar challenges, the future of the Czech steel industry remains uncertain. The global steel market, however, remained relatively stable, with China maintaining its dominance and India and Russia showing notable growth among the top producers.
