MOTIE Drives up Industrial Cooperation with Russia Expressing Higher Al-Ore Import

The Korean Government implements for strengthening economic cooperation with Russia in the raw materials and shipbuilding sectors, in which Russia expressed interest in the Korean intention to import large volumes of aluminum ore, while Korea suggested to hold the Korea-Russia technology cooperation forum and R&D cooperative dialogue within this year.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy(MOTIE) held the ninth Korea-Russia Industrial Cooperative Committee in Moscow, Russia on May 5 and agreed to make efforts in order to commence the free trade agreement in the service and investment sectors agreed at the June Korea-Russia Summit.

The Korean delegation asked for the Russian government to terminate the safeguard probe on steel from a point that the investigation shall be in consistent with the WTO rules which the Eurasia Economic Commission started in August last year.

Both parties in the meeting agreed to continue cooperation in the shipbuilding technology as well as the related equipment materials technology while giving welcomes to the opening of Korea=Russia shipbuilding and Marine Equipment Center. They also agreed to share the information relevant to the plant and promising projects and continue the holdings of the forums.

The meeting was participated by the MOTIE Assistant to Trade Minister, Kim Yong Rae, and other representatives of KIAT, KOTRA and Institute of Offshore and Engineering Equipment. Russia expressed interest in the Korean proposal to import lots of aluminum ore while Korea suggested to hold the Korea-Russia Technology Cooperative Forum and R&D Cooperation this year. Russia has the world No.1 natural gas reserves with its population of 140 million, being the key counterpart of Korea’s New Northward Policy, MOTIE said.
